Temasek 50

Live wishing wall

Please view the web version at http://decks.vslashr.com/Temasek50/ for a better user experience of this proposal.

Objectives

Design and develop a digital art piece for Temasek for their 50th year anniversary.

Have a centrepiece showcase at the physical event that attracts and engages attendees.

This code art piece allows people to explore and enjoy well-wishes by the Temasek community.

Design philosophy

Less is more.

By reducing the friction of how we collect data, and having the form factor set-up in one space, we can concentrate on the animation and code art.

Concept: Live wishing wall

1. Animated wish wall

A screen to display the art piece.

Aspect ratio will be standard 16:9, and is currently likely to be a 7m by 4m LED screen.

Display of well-wishes

The code art piece will continually pull from the backend to ensure that recently submitted entries will be shown.

This will give immediate feedback to those who submitted their well wishes.

If there are few recent entries, older entries from the submitted pool will be selected by topic theme and displayed.

The focus will be on the animation and for attendees to see their well-wishes on the wishing wall immediately after they post it, thus creating engagment.

2. Wish frontend app

QR code pasted on the wall that will lead to a simple web form accessed on mobile.

We will collect information like name, division and the well-wishes.

After submission, the data will go into a backend and then be accessible by the visualization.

Authentication

One of the more elegant ways to do authentication is to piggyback on the Gevme app which is used for attendence.

We can print the attendence ID onto each event badge, and this is used with the attendee's email to authenticate them.

This design is so that people only access their own wishes.

Attendee will only have one attendence ID associated with their name.

Attendee will only have one wish. If they have an existing wish, it will be displayed, and they can overwrite this wish.

However, we still need a way to handle exceptions like:

  • Attendees that are not in the system who register last minute
  • Attendees who did not bring their phone or device or choose not to use their device
  • A way to amend / delete wishes by the event moderators if needed

This is where the backend admin app comes in.

3. Moderator admin app

The Moderator admin app is only accessible by the event moderators (a special link).

This app allows the moderators to select the wish by name and division, and change the wish as per necessary.

This allows us to handle all the above stated exceptions.

The moderator app is now able to trigger animation of the wishing wall, e.g. selecting a tagged category and showing the top wishes of that category.

This allows the moderators to show attendees the data collected, but curated by tags in an interesting way.

4. Tagging, emoticons and integration

Implementing tagging categories, simple emoticon design and designing and implementing simple system for authentication (likely with Gevme)

5. Tech infrastructure and hosting

Since we're not using Temasek IT's resources, we have to procure outside 3rd party SaaS and tools to use.

6. Onsite support

Half day (4 hours) for both Kok Keong and Chi-Loong on day 1. It is useful having both of us there to troubleshoot any potential problems.

If extra manpower is needed on ground it'll be charged at $500 per engineer per half-day.

Breakdown

Quotation

1. Live wall visualization

Animation and visualization design of the code art piece. Working with the projection device specifications.

$12,500

2. QR code wish app

UX design, code + implementation of app for the 2 events: alumni and staff.

$10,000

3. Moderator admin app

Simple moderator admin app that allows the moderators to moderate the data (live) and also input data for exception cases. Moderator app can be used to trigger animation depending on tags chosen.

$6,500

4. Tagging, emoticons and integration

Implementing tagging categories, simple emoticon design and designing and implementing simple system for authentication (likely with Gevme)

$2,500

5. Tech infrastructure and hosting costs (external)

Netlify (web hosting), Supabase (backend) and any other infrastructure costs needed.

$1,500

6. Manpower support on ground for first day

Half day (4 hours) for both Kok Keong and Chi-Loong on day 1. It is useful having both of us there to troubleshoot any potential problems.

$1,000

Total

$34,000

Note: Quotation is subject to change if there are any major changes to the specifications.

If extra manpower is needed on ground it'll be charged at $500 per engineer per half-day.
